Beware of distracted drivers this holiday weekend

As we prepare to celebrate the 249th birthday of the United States of America, the

New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) urges motorists to keep safety their number one priority.

To that end, they and their law enforcement colleagues have ramped up enforcement efforts with a high-visibility campaign dedicated to detecting reckless and intoxicated drivers before they harm themselves or others.

Campaign targets deadly driving behaviors

Beginning this week, law enforcement officers are out in droves along the highly trafficked interstates and surface streets enroute to tourist destinations here in New Hampshire. These patrols will continue throughout the Fourth of July weekend.

According to one high-ranking officer in the NHSP, officers “have zero tolerance for drivers and boaters who unlawfully endanger the safety of others.” The law enforcement officer added that marine patrols on area waterways were also stepped up through the holiday weekend.

Distracted drivers cause collisions

Motorists who appear impaired, those who speed or engage in unsafe driving actions are the focus of the holiday safety campaign. They also are on the lookout for drivers who may get distracted with cellphones or squabbling children.

Distractions are particularly dangerous in heavy traffic, where drivers have to make split-second driving decisions and seconds matter. Remember that the life you save may be your own!

If you get injured in a Fourth of July car accident

Accidents happen, and rarely are they unavoidable. If a distracted or impaired driver’s negligence caused or contributed to your injuries, you may have the right to seek financial compensation by filing a civil claim for damages.
