Reduce personal injury risk at intersections

On Behalf of | Feb 9, 2021 | Personal Injury

When a licensed New Hampshire driver approaches an intersection, he or she must be alert and especially cautious. Crossroads are dangerous sections of roadway, particularly if there are pedestrians nearby. There are several basic tips that help keep drivers and on-foot travelers safe at intersections.

Stationary objects increase risk for collision

For instance, the average driver knows to be on the lookout for pedestrians when approaching intersections. The risk of collision increases if there are parked vehicles or other possible vision obstructions nearby, such as trees, lamp posts or construction signs. It is also important for drivers to make sure their windshields are clear because dirt, ice and other debris can impede visibility.

Drivers should yield to pedestrians to optimize safety

Drivers should always give pedestrians the right-of-way. Pedestrians are obligated to adhere to traffic laws, including walk/don’t walk signs or traffic lights that may be in operation to reduce the risk for collision at a crossroads. When in doubt, however, a person behind the wheel of a motor vehicle should always yield to a pedestrian.

Driver negligence is often a key factor in pedestrian injuries

Several other issues can increase pedestrian danger at a New Hampshire intersection, such as if there is a distracted or drunk driver nearby. If a driver fails to stop at a stop sign or red light, doesn’t scan his or her surroundings before navigating a turn, or otherwise acts with recklessness or negligence, the result may be disastrous. Pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise in many states in recent years. State law allows those who survive their injuries to seek compensation for damages against a motorist who has been deemed responsible for a specific collision.
